Overview
The Barcode Data Generator reads a spreadsheet, works out the barcode value for every row — check digits and all — and writes it back as new columns. The barcode itself is drawn later, by ImposeIQ VDP or by a barcode font; this tool makes sure the data is right first.
Everything is worked out on your computer — nothing is uploaded.
1 · Open a spreadsheet
Open spreadsheet… or drop an Excel (.xlsx, .xls) or .csv file on the window, and pick the sheet. Two samples are there to try every standard: a postal mailing list (names, addresses, ZIP and ZIP+4) for IMb and IMpb, and a warehouse manifest (GTINs, lots, expiry dates and pallets) for GS1-128, SSCC-18 and templates.
2 · Barcode standard
| Standard | What it makes |
|---|
| USPS IMb | The 31-digit numeric Intelligent Mail barcode |
| USPS IMb FADT | The same, as the 65 letters an IMb barcode font needs |
| USPS IMpb | 22-digit Intelligent Mail package barcode, Mod 10 |
| GS1 SSCC-18 | Pallet and shipping container code |
| GS1-128 | Application Identifiers taken from your columns |
| Custom template | Code 128, Code 39, QR Code or Data Matrix from a pattern |
3 · Parameters
Most values can come from a fixed value, a column, a sequence (with a starting number), random digits, or none where the field is optional.
USPS IMb and IMb FADT
- Barcode ID (2 digits): 00 unless you use OEL or presort identification; the second digit is 0–4.
- Service Type ID (3 digits): the STID for your mail class and services, from the USPS STID table.
- Mailer ID (6 or 9 digits): your USPS-assigned MID. A 9-digit MID starts with 9.
- Serial number: padded to 9 digits with a 6-digit MID, or 6 with a 9-digit MID.
- Routing ZIP: ZIP, ZIP+4 or ZIP+4+delivery point. Dashes are ignored, and a ZIP that lost its leading zero in Excel gets it back.
In FADT each letter is one bar — Full, Ascender, Descender, Tracker. Print that column with a USPS IMb font, or use the numeric value with the VDP barcode tool.
USPS IMpb
- Channel application identifier: automatic from the Mailer ID length, or 92, 93, 94 or 95. Check it against USPS Publication 199 for your mailing.
- Service Type Code (3 digits): from Publication 199 for the product and extra services.
- Mailer ID and serial number: the serial fills the remaining digits so the code is 22 long with its check digit.
- Destination ZIP (420) prefix: optional; adds the ZIP routing element in front of the tracking number.
GS1 SSCC-18
- Extension digit (0–9): your choice, often 0; it lets one prefix issue more serials.
- GS1 Company Prefix (6–12 digits).
- Serial reference: padded so prefix and serial make 16 digits.
GS1-128
Add the Application Identifiers in barcode order, each from a column, a fixed value or a sequence: SSCC (00), GTIN (01), contained GTIN (02), batch/lot (10), production, packaging, best-before and expiry dates (11, 13, 15, 17), serial number (21), counts (30, 37), internal codes (90–92), customer PO (400), GLNs (410, 414), ship-to postal code (420) and net weights (3100, 3102, 3202).
GTINs, SSCCs and GLNs get their check digit added when one digit short, and checked when complete. Dates accept 2027-03-31, 3/31/2027 or YYMMDD. The spreadsheet value is either bracketed — (01)00614141000012(17)270331… — or the element string with GS (ASCII 29) separators.
Custom template
Choose the symbology and type a template: {Column Name} puts in a cell, {SEQ} or {SEQ:6} a running number (zero padded), and {ROW} the row number. Click a column name to insert it. Set where the sequence starts, upper-case the result, or append a Mod 10 check digit to all-digit values.
4 · Output columns
- Barcode column name:
BARCODE_VALUE unless you change it. - Human-readable column: adds
_HRI, the text printed under the barcode. - Error column: adds
_ERROR with the reason when a row fails.
Values are written as text cells, so leading zeros survive Excel. Output columns already in the sheet are replaced, not duplicated. Export CSV or Export Excel (.xlsx) saves the result.
Checking the rows
The table shows every row with its barcode value and an OK or Error status, with counts of valid rows and rows with errors at the top. Tick Show only rows with errors to work through the problems, and page through 25 to 250 rows at a time.
Click a row to inspect it: the barcode drawn, its human-readable text, the value with a Copy button, and a breakdown of every part — with the check digit worked out step by step. A row with an error shows why; correct the cell in the spreadsheet or change the parameter. It is exported with an empty barcode, and the message in the _ERROR column if you turned that on.
